What is AHEC?

The Area Health Education Center network is a national system developed to enhance healthcare in underserved areas. The program brings together academic programs and community health needs in ways that benefit communities and, most importantly, individual citizens.

Our Mission

The North Idaho Area Health Education Center’s mission is to enhance access to quality health care, particularly primary and preventive care, by supporting and improving the supply and distribution of healthcare professionals via strategic partnerships with academic programs, communities and professional organizations.

Our Objectives

Established in 2018, the North Idaho AHEC is focusing on three objectives.

  1. Helping communities get the health care professionals they need to meet demands. This includes recruiting providers to rural area, exposing heath care students to rural health care and other innovative ways of meeting rural health care needs.
  2. Helping communities keep the health care professionals they have. This includes leading continuing education programs and connecting professionals to share expertise and resources.
  3. Helping communities grow their own health professionals. This includes working with the WWAMI Medical Program at the University of Idaho and high school pipeline programs to bring Idaho’s own students back to Idaho to practice.

This project is/was supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under grant number U77HP03022, for the WWAMI Area Health Education (WWAMI AHEC) Program Office and its five regional Centers in the total amount of $639,012 for the 2018-19 fiscal year (with a 1:1 total match of $639,012 from non-federally funded governmental sources).
