U of I Twilight Tour at Kimberly Offers Flavorful, Fun Look at Agriculture

The annual University of Idaho Twilight Tour will bring together fun, practical science and food Wednesday, July 18, for farmers and others at the Kimberly Research and Extension Center. The Twilight Tour will run from 5-8 p.m. at the agricultural research farm located at 3806 North 3600 East, a mile northeast of Kimberly along Idaho Highway 50. Antibiotic Resistance, Vaccines, Malaria among Projects Funded for U of I Researchers

University of Idaho researchers are trying to answer questions that could help slow the spread of antibiotic drug resistance, develop techniques to produce vaccines more quickly and help with treatment of malaria thanks to three federal grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The awards to Eva Top, Craig Miller and Holly Wichman in the College of Science and Shirley Luckhart in the colleges of Science and Agricultural and Life Sciences, total nearly $5 million to support multiyear studies aimed at improving disease treatment.

Fabric Dyeing U of I CALS Summer of Science Focus Saturday at Moscow Farmers Market

Here’s a recipe for some fun: cotton bandannas, red cabbage, vinegar and baking soda. Combine all four ingredients and add some artistic license. This Saturday, June 30, children will exercise their creativity in the age-old art form of using natural ingredients to dye fabric from 9 a.m. to noon at the Moscow Farmers Market. The result will be another episode of the Summer of Science series sponsored by the University of Idaho College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Read more

A world expert on vector-borne diseases, such as those carried by ticks and mosquitoes, will speak at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 29, on the fourth floor of the Idaho Commons on the University of Idaho campus. Ron Rosenberg of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is director for science in the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases vector-borne diseases division. Rock Creek Ranch Named in Honor of Rinker Family Following Generous Gift

Rock Creek Ranch, the research, outreach and education facility managed by the University of Idaho, the Wood River Land Trust (WRLT) and The Nature Conservancy, will soon be known as Rinker Rock Creek Ranch in recognition of the generous contributions of the Rinker Family. Harry and Diane Rinker and the Rinker family were honored Thursday, June 21, at the Gail Severn Gallery in Ketchum. The ranch, located in Idaho’s Wood River Valley, is a 10,400-acre property that provides abundant resources for wildlife, recreation and sustainable ranching. Read more
