When a student’s Total Institution GPA falls below a 2.00 GPA the student is placed on Academic Probation. Probation is a serious matter and if not corrected in the subsequent semester could lead to academic disqualification.
Students on probation have a “probation hold” placed on their VandalWeb account and will be unable to register or change registration status (i.e., adding/dropping classes, etc.) until the hold has been removed.
To have the hold removed complete the Probation Academic Plan form (PDF) and the Self-Assessment Survey (PDF). These two documents must be completed before making an appointment to meet with your academic advisor. Completed forms should be returned to [email protected].
NOTE: Freshmen students who went on academic probation after fall semester qualify to attend the Student Options Advising Retreat (SOAR) offered in January. Students benefit from this retreat and is strongly encouraged.
First semester students who fail to achieve a 1.0 GPA for the semester are placed on “Regulation L”/first disqualification and are required to take a semester of leave from the university. After a semester away, students are eligible to return to the university after completing and submitting the Disqualification Academic Plan (PDF) form and the Self-Assessment Survey (PDF). You will work closely with your advisor through the CBE Student Success Program to establish a plan to ensure your academic success during your transition back to school.
Students who began the term on academic probation and do not achieve a 2.0 GPA for the semester are placed on academic disqualification. The university requires first disqualification students to take a semester of leave in order to clarify academic and personal goals. After a semester away, students are permitted to return to the university on academic probation and are required to participate in the CBE Student Success Program.
If you have significant and documented extenuating circumstances, you may appeal for immediate reinstatement. It is important to note that a reinstatement petition is not guaranteed approval and must be submitted by the deadline in order to be considered. To be considered for academic reinstatement, complete the Disqualification Academic Plan (PDF) form and the Self-Assessment Survey (PDF). These documents must be completed before making an appointment. Completed forms should be returned to Assistant Dean Erick Larson at [email protected].
NOTE: The Registrar's Office will drop students from classes the next semester if they are on academic disqualification and are not reinstated by the deadline.

Second or Third Disqualification
To petition for academic reinstatement for a second or third academic disqualification, follow the same process as a first disqualification. However, reinstatement for a third academic disqualification must be approved by the University of Idaho's Academic Petition Committee.
It is difficult to get reinstated immediately following a multiple disqualification situation. The university encourages students in multiple disqualification situations to take time away from school to evaluate their educational objectives.
