Martin Peterson Receives Silver and Gold Award

Martin Petersen (Radio-Television graduate, ‘68) was honored this spring in Moscow with the University of Idaho Silver and Gold Award for more than five decades of public service, much of them to U of I, where he assisted seven U of I presidents over 21 years. JAMM knows Marty best as a member of the School of Journalism and Mass Media’s professional advisory board, where he continues to be a key advisor to four directors of the school on topics ranging from curriculum to facilities to internships.

Marty was born in Lewiston, Idaho, and graduated from Columbia Basin College, the U of I, and Harvard University’s Senior Managers in Government Program. His professional career has included serving on the staff of U.S. Senator Frank Church, as executive director of the Association of Idaho Cities and as budget director of the State of Idaho under Governors John V. Evans and Cecil Andrus. He was part of the transition team for Idaho Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter. He directed the planning and administration of Idaho’s statehood centennial celebration in 1990 and the James A. and Louise McClure Center for Public Policy Research at U of I.

In retirement, Marty is active in community affairs. He currently serves as president of the Foundation for Idaho History, which is playing the lead role in raising funds for the $17 million expansion of the state museum.  He is on the boards of Friends of Idaho Public Television, the James A. and Louise McClure Center for Public Policy and on the advisory board for the U of I’s School of Journalism and Mass Media. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Idaho Statesman and is a frequent guest on Idaho Public Television’s “Idaho Reports” and “Outdoor Idaho”.

Marty and his wife Barb (‘73) live in Boise.
