Student Groups

The School of Journalism and Mass Media takes pride in helping students succeed inside and outside the classroom. Faculty members encourage students to get involved in Student Media and student clubs, including the Strat/Comm Club, the Vandal Hollywood Film Club and SPJ. These co-curricular activities give students a chance to apply classroom concepts to real-life situations. They also nurture connections with alumni and regional media professionals through guest speakers, field trips and conferences. One of the student groups, SPJ is affiliated with a national organization, the

Open to all majors. Students interested in television, movies, the Internet, production, commercials, documentaries, audio, video, Web design, animation and graphics are encouraged to join.

The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s largest and most broad-based journalism organization. It encourages the free practice of journalism and stimulates high standards of ethical behavior. The UI chapter works to uphold these standards. Members will meet potential employers, learn about jobs and internships, hear journalists speak about current issues, attend conferences and apply for awards.

Faculty advisors: Becky Tallent and Steve Smith
