Finding An Outside Laboratory

Heather Rice
Idaho Falls
Water Resources Management, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Idaho Falls

As an undergraduate studying microbiology at the University of Idaho, Heather Rice believed she was destined to work in a lab. That notion quickly dissipated, however, when she participated in “A Day With a Lab Technician.”

Now a graduate student in water resources management at U of I Idaho Falls, Rice, 34, soon discovered she had a passion for the environment and hydrology – a large issue in the state of Idaho that allows her to work mostly outside.

She worked for various environmental companies including as a fishery technician for the Idaho Department Fish and Game to her current position as a hydrologist with Aberdeen-Springfield Canal Company. Rice is working on a model that will monitor capacity in canals and utilize light detection and ranging (lidar) technology. Rice decided to go back to school to earn her master's degree in water resources management in order to delve into advanced research.

For Rice, returning to U of I was a given.

“I am a Vandal,” Rice said, noting she has been “impressed with the level of excellence the professors and committees continually work at, while providing her with a wealth of knowledge and tools to be successful in her career field.” And she is grateful for the opportunities God has provided her throughout her education and profession.

As Rice completes her thesis on water loss in canals ahead of graduation in fall 2018, she has plans to work toward her doctorate in groundwater movement.
