Staff Council Openings for FY19

Staff Council is looking for enthusiastic board-appointed staff members to fill positions becoming available starting June 1, 2018 for Fiscal Year 19.

Staff Council’s mission is to promote recognition, empowerment, advocacy and leadership necessary to create a professional, collegial environment and work experience for staff members employed at the University of Idaho. Our purpose is to study the issues, problems, the welfare and working conditions for staff members, to advise on salary and promotion matters. We envision a safe, professional, collegial and equitable environment for all staff members.

Participants will be required to attend the Staff Council meeting every month, from 9-11 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month in the Paul Joyce Faculty Staff Lounge.

We are looking for all facets of board-appointed staff members (exempt, classified, off-campus and maintenance & skilled craft positions) that want to make the University of Idaho a better place, with a focus on our above mission and purpose. 2018 Staff Awards 

The Staff Awards Committee is pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 Outstanding Staff Awards, the McBride Prize and the Staff Educational Awards. The Committee was amazed by the number of nominations, and though it made our job difficult, we were impressed with how many incredible people we have the privilege of working with. The winners, along with staff retiring from the university and longevity recipients for service to the university in five-year increments, will be honored at the Awards Ceremony on April 24, 2018, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the International Ballroom located in the Bruce Pitman Center. The ceremony will include a luncheon, and registration to the event will open to all staff on April 9, 2018. Watch the Register for info on registration, and RSVP quickly, as space is limited.

Suicide Prevention Training 

Vandal Health Education and the Counseling & Testing Center will offer Question, Persuade, Refer suicide prevention training for students and employees at 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in the Commons Aurora Room and via Zoom. QPR is an evidenced-based, one-hour training program to help faculty, staff and students respond to someone in a mental health crisis and thinking about suicide. The MILL

The Making, Innovating and Learning Laboratory (MILL), located on the first floor of the U of I Library, offers weekly workshops on a diverse array of topics.

The MILL is a collaborative learning space where students, staff and faculty can come together to use our unique technology. The MILL promotes an inclusive, low-risk learning environment; there is no need for previous experience, just come with the desire to use our space or services—there is no prerequisite for learning. Our mission in the MILL is to act as an access point for new and exciting technology, giving patrons the tools to reach their learning goals.

Our workshops support our mission by focusing on casual learning and accessibility. When hosting technical workshops, such as 3D design or graphic design, we make sure the software we use is free for everyone. When hosting hands-on or “maker” based workshops, such as screen printing or glass etching, we provide participants with all needed supplies. Most workshops are introductory, teaching participants the basics of a topic or skill so they can leave the workshop with a foundational knowledge to build upon if they want to learn more.

Workshops take place on Wednesdays or Thursdays from 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Upcoming workshops and locations are as follows:

April 5: Open Image Editing: Getting started with GIMP and other open-source media software, U of I Library’s First Floor Classroom (120)
April 12: Screen Printing, the MILL
April 19: Modeling with 3D Paint, the MILL
May 4: May the Fourth Be With You: A Day of Star Wars Activities, the MILL

Heidi Rogers retires

Heidi Rogers, University of Idaho Coeur d’Alene Technical Specialist of 25 years, celebrated her retirement from the university with friends and colleagues in the Harbor Center. Heidi continues her work for the Northwest Council for Computer Education locally. We wish you all the very best, Heidi!

Great successes found in the Inspire Idaho Experience Tour

The Inspire Idaho Experience Tour, held March 26-29, was a collaborative adventure between the University of Idaho, the Innovation Collective and a dozen experts in the highly intuitive Swift coding language from Apple. Teams comprised of members from U of I, Innovation Collective and Apple traveled to 20 towns and cities over three days to hold 57 sessions, allowing InspireID to enable training in app development for the entire state.

Citizens were introduced to the powerful and intuitive Swift coding language in a “gamified” environment. People with no coding background quickly learned that they could use Swift code to direct robots to flash in different colors and turn circles while speeding around the room.

The Experience Tour introduced a new opportunity for any Idahoan interested in participating in the new knowledge economy. Utilizing Apple’s free curriculum, InspireID participants will learn to develop their own iOS app. InspireID will support participant groups with access to a designated expert who will provide suggestions and troubleshooting. Participants may also form small teams to build apps. The outcome of the curriculum is completion of a fully developed app, ready for the app store.

What’s Next?
The Inspire Idaho program aims to arm interested citizens with the skills to participate in the economic realities facing the future workforce. The nation continues to transition into a knowledge-based, technology-driven economy. The Idaho Department of Labor ranked Software Developers and Programmers as the state’s #1 “Hot Job” in its 2014-2024 occupational projections. InspireID will enable people to embrace this change by learning coding skills, which include critical thinking and problem solving. Registration for the free program is open and available on the website. Groups will be formed in each of the 20 cities with first launch anticipated in May.

Groundhog Day

The staff and faculty in Idaho Falls gathered for the annual Groundhog Day celebration with snacks, hats, a big stuffed groundhog and the coveted groundhog medallion. This year the medallion was won by CALS staff member and staff council representative Melinda Lent.

College of Eastern Idaho Open House

University of Idaho, Idaho Falls participated in the open house for the newly christened College of Eastern Idaho. Representatives encouraged students to continue their education with the many options offered at the University Place campus.

On February 23 University Place in Idaho Falls held its annual career fair. Employers from all over the region set up at the fair to meet all of the well qualified graduates or soon to be graduates and discuss the many opportunities that await our students.

Visit from Prospective Graduate Students

The Idaho Falls campus recently hosted prospective graduate students from BYU and BYUI for a visit to the campus to see what the University of Idaho has to offer. The students had the opportunity to visit with faculty, have a demo of the Computer Aided Virtual Environment (CAVE) at the Center for Advanced Energy Studies and meet with current graduate students.
