Student Athlete Pursues Higher Education
University of Idaho women’s volleyball player Jenna Ellis ‘15 graduated from U of I with a degree in nutrition, and with Vandal scholarship assistance she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in family and consumer sciences in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and hopes to complete a bachelor’s degree in dietetics by May 2017.
“Playing collegiate volleyball became a dream of mine when I was in sixth grade, which is when I fell in love with the sport,” Ellis said.
Ellis has been playing on a volleyball team since she was in the third grade. She played outside hitter and has transitioned to the position of ds/libero for the U of I volleyball team.
“I knew I wanted to pursue a college education because my mom had done so (my role-model) and only a few other members of my family. I come from a relatively low-income family and did not have a huge college savings to my name,” Ellis said. “In high school, I worked hard on and off the court to pursue my college dreams.”
After Ellis finishes her degrees, she plans on earning certification as specialist in sports dietetics. With her degrees and certifications she plans to one day work for a university as a professor, sports dietitian or campus dietitian.
“Receiving a partial academic scholarship my freshman year and athletic scholarship for the next three consecutive years has been an enormous blessing,” she said. “Thanks to the scholarships I have received, my time in Moscow has been shaped by life-long friendships, life-changing moments and the forming and pursuit of my career goals”
Ellis knows she has a large group of supporters and can’t thank donors enough for what they do to support college athletes.
“Jesus is my No. 1. God has blessed me with my mother, Tawna Ellis, my younger sister, Kayla Ellis, and close friends to lean on for support and view as role models,” Ellis said. “To all of you that have helped make my academic and athletic goals possible, thank you for your kindness and support.”
