Career Actor Reinvigorated by U of I Theatre-Makers

Mathew Brumlow was a professional actor living and working in Chicago for the last 20 years before he decided to attend the University of Idaho and pursue a Masters of Fine Arts degree in directing. He chose to attend the University of Idaho Theater Department because of its academic excellence, as well as the scholarship, faculty, staff and students.

“I have been so refreshed artistically and spiritually by the theatre-makers here at Idaho,” Brumlow said. “There is a rigor and attention to detail that is modeled by the faculty. There are large hearts as well. Every single teacher and professor genuinely cares about the development of the students, inside and out. The students in the program just blow me away. There is an incredible work ethic, imagination through the roof, risk-taking, vulnerability and commitment that I have seldom seen in artists at their age.”

Through scholarship assistance at U of I, Brumlow was able to take advantage of some opportunities that he might not have otherwise.

“I am a T.A. for Dr. Diane Carter for Communications 101, which provides half of my tuition, for which I am extremely grateful,” Brumlow said. “I am also the recipient of two scholarships this year—the Jean Collette Graduate Theatre Scholarship and the Thomas L. Cooper Theatre Scholarship. These two scholarships are big blessings. I am using them to help pay for the trip to Russia with U of I theatre students.”

During their Moscow, Russia trip, not only will the students be exposed to a good amount of theatre, but will also have a chance to participate in a rigorous training program. This program will six days a week and twelve hours a day and include working with the teachers, actors, and artists of the Moscow Art Theatre.

“It will be a life-changing experience and it represents one of the many reasons why the theatre program at U of I is special and also why their students are flourishing,” Bumlow said.
