Creative Writer Finds Community at UI
Although Melanie Thongs started her working career off writing magazine articles, she stumbled across a literary nonfiction essay that changed her world. Through scholarship assistance, Thongs was able to apply and attend the University of Idaho to turn her passion into a career.
“As a returning student, I have had to juggle teaching with my own classwork while still raising my two kids—it’s been a busy three years,” Thongs said. “All of my scholarship funds have gone directly to pay tuition and fees, which have helped me keep my student loans to a minimum and have allowed me to focus on my studies.”
Thongs plans to be an active, publishing writer who teaches in an Master of Fine Arts program. Your support allows students, like thongs, to pursue and achieve their dreams.
“The support has made a huge difference — otherwise I would have had to pay that money out of pocket,” Thongs said. “I am extremely grateful to the people who willingly support students such as myself in our academic endeavors. It is my goal to make sure that the money donated to my scholarship was money well spent by the donor.”
