Multifactor Authentication (MFA)
Protecting both university data and UI employee and student personal information is a top priority for the university and Information Technology Services (ITS). Stronger security measures are needed to help keep UI information safe.
In response, UI is implementing multifactor authentication (MFA) university-wide effective starting fall 2017. It is partnering with a company named Duo Security to offer this higher level data protection process. MFA adoption will be mandatory for all employees and students.
What does this change mean for you? MFA (also called two-factor authentication) enhances the security to UI accounts by requiring a secondary electronic device or application to verify your login — in addition to your current UI password. Business or personal devices such as mobile phones and tablets are the simplest way to achieve this second level of confirmation and authentication.
MFA Enrollment and Next Steps
All UI employees and students will transition to a second layer of authentication using Duo’s security software application which is free. Here are the steps:
- All employees and students. which will enable you to perform two-factor authentication. This takes about two minutes. Duo does not replace or require you to change your UI username and password. Think of Duo as an extra layer of security added to your pre-existing login method.
- Select the electronic device you want to use to confirm your identity for the second layer authentication (i.e. mobile phone, windows phone, landline phone, iPad, tablet, laptop or hardware token). Note: using your smartphone is highly recommended for this process. Go to step 3 if you would like to use your smartphone for MFA.
- Smartphone MFA. To use your smartphone for the MFA process, you will need to install and activate the free Duo Mobile app(in addition to enrolling in Duo). Once you do this, you will receive a “Duo Push” or incoming message notification on your smartphone each time you need to verify your identity for system login. With one push of a green-colored “approve” button, you will have completed the second layer.
