Managing your U Drive Quota

After completion, you will be able to reduce and keep your U drive quota down.
Each student, faculty and staff at the University of Idaho is provided 25GB of quota on their User drive. If you find yourself up against the drive quota and unable to save, you can take the following steps to give yourself some file-breathing room.
Check your Usage Quota:
You can quickly and easily check your data quota if you are logged in to a lab computer running windows by finding your U: Drive under My Computer, then right-clicking on the drive, and selecting Properties. The General Information tab should pop up and automatically calculate the disk space and tell you how much data you are using.
Empty your Recycle Bin/Trash & Delete Unused Files:
If you are finding yourself up against the drive quota, you will discover that not only can you not save new files or move existing files — you won’t even be able to delete files! Why? Because deleting a file doesn’t mean it’s gone — it just means Windows (or OS X) has moved the file to the recycle bin. Files in the recycle bin are still stored on your U drive and still count against your quota.
If you have files in the recycle bin, emptying it regularly will free up drive space quota for you to use.
Delete Files Directly – Bypass the Recycle Bin:
If you are over your quota but your recycle bin is already empty, you will be unable to move files to the recycle bin to delete them. Instead, you can delete files directly by left-clicking on a file and then holding the shift key while clicking the delete item from the menu. This will automatically delete the file off the U drive without putting it in the recycle bin, instantly freeing up the space.
Unfortunately, there is no similar function on a Mac.
Open Large Files Instead of Saving Them:
If you routinely download a large number of files (or files that are large by nature) you can save disk space by opening the file instead of saving it. This option is presented to you when you download a file — if you choose to open the file, it will be downloaded but stored in temporary memory. You can view the file but it is removed when you close it.
Saving a file, however, is the traditional download method. This saves a copy of the file locally (on your U drive). While giving you the freedom to go back and open the file at a later time without having to re-download it, this takes up disk space.
Request More Disk Space:
If you are constantly running up against the disk quota, you can request to have this quota increased. Students can get this quota increase for free if it is for academic use and faculty/staff can increase the quota for a nominal price.
