Center for Digital Inquiry and Learning Awards First Digital Scholarship Fellowships

October 27, 2016

The University of Idaho’s Center for Digital Inquiry and Learning (CDIL) — a collaborative effort of the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences and the University of Idaho Library — has awarded its first Digital Scholarship Fellowships to professors in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and of the School of Journalism and Mass Media.

The CDIL Digital Scholarship Fellowship is designed to support faculty as they explore digital means for publishing or accomplishing their research. The award, funded through a awarded to CDIL in 2016, provides course reassignments for one semester. Camp and Bennett will start their projects in the spring 2017 semester and will publish their work online via CDIL’s web platforms. The pair also will share insights from their work through workshops in the new CDIL facility, Room 211 of the UI Library.

Camp’s fellowship funds a project that will utilize geographic information systems (GIS) data and augmented reality (AR) technologies to map Moscow Cemetery. The tool will allow a visitor to use a mobile phone or other device to view various media and archival data pertaining to a particular gravesite in the cemetery. Camp is associate professor of anthropology and director of the Alfred W. Bowers Laboratory of Anthropology in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences.

Bennett will spend the spring producing a documentary about the 2016 murder of Idaho resident Steven Nelson, a UI alumnus, which will include the oral histories of members of Idaho’s LGBTQA community. Additionally, Bennett plans to use CDIL resources to deliver and preserve the collection of oral histories in an online portal and digital archive. Intending to document voices from every county in Idaho, Bennett hopes the documentary and collection will promote awareness of LGBTQA marginalization in the state and provoke political change. Bennett is an assistant professor of journalism and mass media focusing on digital media production and documentary film.

“CDIL is excited to work with Stacey and Denise on the development of these projects, both of which promise to have an impact on digital scholarship at the university well past the end of the fellowships,” said Devin Becker, head of data and digital services at the UI Library.

CDIL is an interdisciplinary consortium working to provide digital scholarship resources and opportunities for the faculty, staff and students of the University of Idaho. Established in 2015, it is currently using its Vandal Ideas Project funds to promote digital scholarship on campus.
