Vice President for Research and Economic Development Finalists

The Search Advisory Committee is pleased to invite three finalists for the position of Vice President for Research and Economic Development back to Idaho to participate in campus visits May 18 - 28, 2016. Candidates will visit and present seminars in Boise and Idaho Falls as well as return to Moscow for follow-up meetings.

There will be feedback forms available online until the close of business on Tuesday, May 31.


Clause HolzMary Holz-Clause is dean of agriculture at Cal Poly Pomona, a position she has held since 2014.  Prior to moving to California she was the first Vice President for Economic Development at the University of Connecticut (UConn), where she provided leadership for existing and new economic growth initiatives in the state. She joined UConn in 2011 and oversaw all operations of the Office of Economic Development (OED). From 2006-2011 Holz-Clause served as  the Associate Vice President for Extension and Outreach and Director of Global Programs at Iowa State University (ISU),  She also was Founder and Manager of the virtual Agricultural Marketing Resource Center (AgMRC), established in 2002.  Before entering the realm of universities, Holz-Clause was Research Director at the Iowa Department of Economic Development.  She received a B.S. degree in agricultural business, a Masters of Public Administration and a Ph.D. in agriculture education and technology transfer, all from ISU.

John LiuDr. Zhanjiang (John) Liu is currently serving as the Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Research at Auburn University. In this capacity, he provides leadership for research operations in the academy and serves as the liaison between the VPR Office, the Provost Office, and the University’s colleges/schools and other units. Prior to this position, he served as Associate Dean for Research for the College of Agriculture, and Assistant Director for the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station 2007-2013. Dr. Liu is an AAAS Fellow, and played various leadership roles at the national level including developing the USDA Blueprint for Animal Genomics research, and serving as the Aquaculture Coordinator for the USDA NRSP-8 Project. He received his Ph.D. in 1989 in Molecular and Cellular Biology, and M.S. in Plant Pathology, both from the University of Minnesota, and B.S.  in 1981 in Entomology and Plant Pathology from Northwest Agricultural University in China. He completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Minnesota Medical School, and worked as R&D Director for National Biosciences. Since 1995, Dr. Liu has been on the faculty in the School of Fisheries at Auburn University. Dr. Liu has obtained over $46 million in grants and contracts, and published over 290 papers and four books.

Janet NelsonDr. Janet E. Nelson serves as Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Development at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and has a focus of building and supporting multidisciplinary teams and growing the research enterprise.  She holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Caltech and has nearly 30 years of experience in scientific research, scientific review and research portfolio administration, complex and multi-disciplinary program/project management, business development, and science policy implementation. She is a demonstrated leader with direct career experiences across academia, government, not-for-profit organizations, and industrial communities; she has technical experience ranging from catalysis and energy research to biomedical research and enabling technology development.
