Geoscience magazine EOS highlighted a Water Resources Research study by Jeff Reeder with the U of I Center for Ecohydraulics Research. The study, which included Boise State University researchers, showed that organisms that live in the oxygen-poor sediments of stream beds vary their oxygen consumption rate, which researchers had thought remained fixed. Oxygen consumption varied with food availability and the speed of water flowing through the sediments. Their findings can improve models of stream bed oxygen availability, which affects the release of pollutants, metabolic waste and nutrients from the sediments.

The Research and Faculty Development Team (RFDT) in the Office of Research and Economic Development is forming groups of faculty peers who are submitting proposals to the National Science Foundation Career program. RFDT will establish regular weekly hourlong (or bi-monthly 90-minute) meetings at the same place/time, beginning the first week in May. We'll use a Doodle Poll to survey interested individuals to find a time that works for the majority. Off-campus participants may Zoom in. The group will work on one section of the proposal per meeting. Prior to each meeting, participants will email their draft of the current section to the group to preview. During the meetings, an equal amount of time will be spent discussing each participant's draft section for the purpose of improvement. Read more
