Personal Drones Prohibited on Campus

University of Idaho policy requires formal approval for official use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly called drones, from the UI UAS Committee. Personal use of UAS by university faculty, staff, students or third parties on university property is prohibited, except as approved by the executive director of the Office of Public Safety and Security. For more information regarding UAS usage or policies, please visit the UI Unmanned Aircraft Systems website or email [email protected].

RSVP Now for Export Control Seminar

The Office of Research and Economic Development will provide an export control seminar for faculty, staff and students from 2-3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, in the Commons Horizon Room. The seminar will overview Treasury, State, and Commerce export control regulations, followed by questions and answers. This seminar should be of particular interest to those involved in research, international travel, and shipping abroad. Seating is limited so please RSVP to [email protected].

Change to Principal Investigator Time Charge Requirement

The University of Idaho Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) will no longer require UI researchers to charge a minimum 2 percent of principal investigator time to all externally funded sponsored projects. Effective immediately, new proposal submissions do not have to include the 2 percent commitment, but it will remain on awarded projects until the project closes.

The university chose to require the 2-percent commitment in 2011, based on federal requirements. However, ORED decided to stop enforcing this requirement due to concerns about the administrative burden it imposes.

A policy update to APM 45.22 reflecting this change will be issued at a later date.

Though the requirement will no longer be in effect, ORED asks investigators to think carefully before choosing not to include lead PI salaries on a project. Investigators’ time is a valuable commodity and should be treated as such.

Also, please note that ORED still expects investigators to charge the full value of time worked on non-federal flow-through industry contracts. The university cannot subsidize private industry.

Questions regarding this change should be directed to the Sponsored Projects Administrator assigned to your unit or to Deb Shaver, 111-111-4627 or [email protected]
