The University of Idaho College of Science is working to build scientific interest among the general public, and especially to build interest in the study of science among students in our schools. We also work to improve the quality of our science and mathematics education and to make that education accessible to more people.
Women in Math and Science
The Women In Math and Science program brings half-day to full-day science and mathematics activities to Idaho girls in seventh to 11th grades. Girls from Plummer to Bonners Ferry are invited each fall to participate in the Coeur d’Alene WIMS event, conducted in cooperation with the UI Coeur d’Alene Center and North Idaho College. Then each spring a WIMS event in Boise involves girls from the Boise and Meridian school districts.
Invent Idaho and other K-12 programs
In recent years the University of Idaho College of Science has helped to host several state and regional school competitions. We have been proud to host the regional finals for the Middle School Science Bowl, and have become the annual home for the Invent Idaho state finals. The College of Science values these opportunities to serve the broader community and to help foster excitement for education.
Gateway to Mathematics Project
The is an alliance between universities, K-12 schools, and private sector partners. We focus on developing a sustainable and adaptable model for web-based mathematics education. We are promoting greater access to calculus courses in high schools across the state, though on-campus and distance learning opportunities.
